As in Foseco Foundry, Foseco Steel's products make up a relatively low proportion of the overall cost of a customer's production cost and, as well as being essential to the process, can provide significant benefits to yield and quality for customers. Foseco Steel's competitive strength comes from an intimate knowledge of the steel industry, provision of a performance-enhancing suite of products and the Group's experienced sales team and pre/post-sales technical support.

Foseco Steel has a smaller customer base than Foseco Foundry, reflecting the nature of the steel industry, which has seen significant consolidation in recent years. However, whilst the number of headline customer groups may be relatively small, there are a large number of autonomous individual steel plants being supplied.

From the mid-1990s Foseco had rationalised it’s Steel business concentrating in just two major areas: Europe and North America. Production was through four manufacturing facilities situated within those two regions. Reflecting the massive build up of steel production in other areas, a new manufacturing facility has been commissioned successfully near Tianjin, China and another investment is planned in Russia. Foseco is well regarded technologically and its excellence in product design and process improvement, delivered by its skilled technicians, provides the Company with a competitive advantage. The Group supplies a wide range of consumables and high temperature refractories for the predominant Continuous Casting process (mainly in and around the Tundish), for melting operations including Injection Lances, Slag Retention Products and Degasser Snorkels, and for Ingot Casting (mainly Hot Tops).
